Chennai: A total of 740 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored at a Private Container Freight Station (CFS) in Manali New Town, about 30 km north of the Chennai city was found after an inspection conducted by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board’s (TNPCB).
It is revealed that hazardous chemical is stored in a ‘safe’ place but somehow, the authorities also found out the two residential areas of maximum population of 12000 people, are located under 2 kilometers from the CFS.
According to the reports by the TNPCB, During September 2015, nearly 37 containers, each measuring 20 feet, were seized when they had arrived at the Chennai port from South Korea.
The inspection authorities issued a statement, that assured the CFS is located 20 kilometers away from the city and that there’s no residential area surrounding it, and it’s stored at a location where there’s barely warehouses and no inhabitation can be found within a 2 kilometers of the radius. And the cargo is stored securely harming none.
Therefore, It is reported that the chemical is stored safely in polypropylene bags. The customs department has also stated that the bidding process has been started and thus the auction will be completed in 3 days. Further, the inspection done by TNPCB was ordered by the State Government.
