Recent developments in science have confused people around the globe, especially the netizens. Bees have been trained by Scientists in the Netherlands to identify the Coronavirus through their sense of smell. This has been made public by Wageningen University.
They were trained by giving them a treat, for example, a sugar-water solution every time they were exposed to the scent of a solution infected with COVID-19. Each time the bees were exposed to a non-infected sample, they would not get a reward. This process is known as Pavlovian conditioning.
With time, the bees could identify an infected sample in no time and would then stick out their tongues like clockwork to collect their reward. They began sticking out their tongues each time they could identify the virus.
This research is based on the fact that metabolic changes from the Coronavirus make an infected person’s bodily fluids smell different from those of a non-infected person.
It’s still not confirmed if this is a safe and secure way to detect Covid-19 outside the laboratory.
