Tamil Nadu government establishes a new and exclusive Drone Police Unit for a better Chennai police. The GO announced today said the cost is estimated to be 3.6 crore rupees.

The drone police unit will be consisting of three types of drones- quick response special payload drone, long-range surveillance drone, and lifeguard drone. The first one will have a multi-rotor drone it is capable of interchanging payloads, it is equipped with an HD camera, thermal, night vision, live video recording, loudspeaker(100gms) for the public announcement, 2 Kms continuous flight time with a gross weight of 2.5 Kgs.

The next variety, the long-range surveillance drone is a hybrid drone, it is a quadcopter, and wing plane to make a steep vertical takeoff and landing. This will fly for 100 mins straight, in a 30 km range with a gross weight of 5 Kg. The last range of it is the lifeguard drone is high powered and can lift heavy loads continuously for 15 minutes.

All the drones in addition to all the features, an optical zoom camera with an automatic number plate reader (ANPR), and the deployment of police personnel assisted with Artificial Intelligence in the ground station with a dedicated ground station unit for each drone will also be integrated.

The new drone police unit will have two components which are, the drones and a well-furnished container office with a high-rise platform for facilitating the take-off and landing. It is also equipped with an automatic roof, control units, monitors, power backups, furniture, landscaping systems, high-end servers, connectivity, and so on. The office, for now, will be temporary and made out of container cabins and a control room on the ground floor with an upper deck for drone operation.

The drone department, for now, consists of nine drones, six quick response drones, two long-range surveillance drones, and one lifeguard drone worth 3 crore rupees will be purchased and the remaining money would be spent on setting up the office. Police suggested placing the drones in the Marina adjacent to Gandhi Statue or the Elliots Beach or Pondy Bazaar for the time being, to the state government.

This new project was announced by the TamilNadu Chief Minister M.K Stalin in the state assembly. He said that this will be implemented at the vantage points in the city to aid and assist the police officers and also reduce the response time to the distress calls and to conduct surveillance in the VIP routes and crime-prone areas, to rescue people who are stranded on the beach areas and in high rise buildings during fire accidents.
