On 20.04.2021-Tuesday, six containers in the container yard of the container terminal located in the Zone-’A’ of VOC Port Trust Thoothukudi were seized by the DRI officials from Madurai out of suspicion. They were transshipment containers with the consignment of timber logs transported from Panama via Colombo.
Suspicious bags were found in the containers when searched, each bag contained 30 bricks of highly compressed white material suspected as cocaine. One of the officials said that “the exact type of the drug can only be determined after narcotics examination, but the worth of seized drugs might be above 1,500 crores as the international market value of the cocaine is around 5 to 6 crores per kg”.
The contraband has been seized along with the wooden logs under provisions of the NDPS Act,1985. The ship bearing the flag of Singapore was a regular container of transport between Colombo and Thoothukudi. It arrived on Tuesday at 10.30 am, the exporter is said to be from Texas and the importer from Shenkottai, Tamil Nadu. the officials suspect the involvement of a Latin American drug cartel supplying cocaine shipped through Panama.
