Oxygen scarcity has become a major issue all over the nation currently. However, Tamil Nadu has not reported any case of deficiency for this essential product. The government officials have said that this is the result of capacity building done to improve the storage and distribution of medical oxygen over the last year.
At present, the daily demand for medical oxygen is 240MT in the state, Tamil Nadu has the capacity of providing 400MT of oxygen mostly produced by private companies. The state has additional storage facilities storing up to 1200MT’s of oxygen.
The private companies: INOX, Praxair and JSW steels are majorly producing oxygen to the state. An average amount of 140 MT liquid oxygen has been produced, stored, and transported per day by INOX, Liquid medical oxygen is compressed into gas and then administered to the patient.
“However about oxygen, it is an activity to be monitored 24*7. While the state can be satisfied with the work done till now, we have to keep planning for the peaks,” as said by Health secretary J Radhakrishnan. Even Though Tamil Nadu is currently able to fulfill the demands for medical oxygen. Authorities fear the trouble they might face if the cases rise.
