In Tamil Nadu, Covid-19 Is Killing Young People With No Underlying Health Conditions

People below the age of 40 years who are young and healthy are still dying of corona in Tamil Nadu. According to the data observed on January 10 tamil Nadu’s Covid death numbers reached 12,222 and about 18% of those were without any serious health issues. After a couple of months  such people accounted for 6063 of the 15,648 deaths. 

People with uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension and above the age of 50 are dying in a huge number. But during the last four to six weeks, it can be observed that more young and healthy people are in ICUs.

5 of the 298 who died were in their 20s and had no serious health conditions. From the age group of people in their 30s, a 30 year old man and 37 year old woman with diabetes and another man with chronic kidney disease. At least 21 of the 48 people in their 40s had no serious health conditions.

From the beginning of the year till May, the growth rate of deaths was a high 37% among people in the 31 to 40 age group. There were around 456 deaths between the age of 31 to 40 on 10 jan and 623 on May 9. After a couple of days,there was an increase in the number of deaths in the 20-30 age group from 142 to 187. Overall there was a toll of 28%.

According to Dr Theranirajan from Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital they have been able to reduce morbidity and mortality in people who reach hospitals early.

According to recent findings a lot of people below the age of 40 have been struggling to find beds in the ICUs. It’s still not evident why young and healthy people are dying.  There are no scientific reasons for this yet. It’s still not sure whether the young people who are from a better  socio-economic background have a higher risk of lifestyle disorders.
