For the past few years, we are seeing South Indian actors performing in Bollywood movies and series. Dhanush and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, famous actors in South Indians have been acting in movies. The talent of the South Indian film industry is yet to be discovered by Bollywood. However, South Indians were being stereotyped in Hindi movies earlier.
Priyamani’s View On Bollywood movies
Actress Priyamani, the lead role in ‘The Family Man’ won hearts with her stunning performance. She spoke about how South Indian actors were made to speak in Hindi movies. And in the meantime, she also told how Bollywood actors depict South Indians. According to her, the accent spoken by South Indians in Hindi was represented in a funny way.
Here’s what she said
“Finally, the talent in the South is also getting recognised. There was a time when earlier we had people like Sridevi, Rekha, Hema Malini, Vyjayanthimala, who ruled Bollywood. And then there was a dearth. We have only Hindi-speaking actors in Bollywood and they used to sort of portray South Indians – could be somebody from Chennai, could be somebody from Kerala – they used to portray them as people who used to not speak Hindi in the normal way – ‘Aiyo, kaisa ji, kya bolta ji’- like that.”
Adding to it, Priyamani said that things are not the same now. As Bollywood is now including expert south Indians in movies. Meanwhile, it is a sense of achievement for South Indians. And they are achieving an accomplishment for themselves and getting what justice demands.
“I’ve also seen a lot of films like that and I used to think to myself that South Indians don’t speak Hindi like that. But you know, maybe it’s their version. Maybe they have come across some people who did speak Hindi like that. And after a point, they stopped that and started getting South technicians to Bollywood. We saw a surge of a lot of South Indian technicians coming to Bollywood and making their mark successfully. At present , I’m very happy that finally South talent is also getting recognized here in Bollywood and South stars are also getting their due.”
