Tamil Nadu Man Commits Suicides After Losing Lakhs Through Online Gaming

Manimuthu, an electronic store manager committed suicide after losing money through online gambling in Salem district. The body was found in a nearby temple of Veppilakatti. Soon the locals infored the police about they found Manimuthu along with a suicide note.

Manimuthu states his death is because of the increasing criticism against RN Ravi. As the Tamil Nadu’s governor, RN Ravi has not passed any bills for banning online gaming. However the temporary ban lapsed on 27 November. Although the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulations of Online Games Bill 2022 was passed on 19 October in the assembly. The Governor gave some clarity and explanation last week.  

The state decided to finally take off the online gambling and gaming after forming a committee which was led by K Chandru, a retired Madras High Court justice. This was done to study the impact and adverse effects of online gambling.

There are alot of similar cases where people are comminting suicide after losing money from online gambling platform. A laborer named Maji who was working in Sankarankovil died after losing Rs. 70,000 online. In another instance a 20 year old student from Chennai committed suicide on Sunday. He lost all his savings after investing it on an online gambling app. Not only this there are alot of similar cases where people have lost lakhs through gambling online. 

While the government waits for the Governor’s approval. A representative from the E-Gaming Federation meets the governor in Chennai’s Raj Bhavan. Although the meeting was a success. There is no formal press release by the members of the federation as the agenda was unclear.

After the dealth of Manimuthu, the President of PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi) and the former Union minister said, “the gradual increase in the number of suicides has show how dangerous online gambling is”. If gambling is not ban people will lose money and suicide rate will increase.

It’s time that the government takes action against the gambling and online gaming platforms. And as individuals people take proper measures before investing or doing any online activity.
