TN Govt Decides To Withdraw Cases Against Sterlite & Compensation Of 1 Lakh Rupees Paid To Victims

The Thoothukudi massacre that took place on May 22nd, 2018 led to the shut down of a copper smelter plant that was run by Sterilite Corporation. Thousands of civilians were a part of this massacre, out of which 13 people were brutally killed in police firing and 100 were severely wounded.

On Friday, the TN government decided to pull back the cases filed against the anti-Sterilite protesters. The chief minister MK Stalin issued appointment letters to the family members of the people who were arrested and mentally tortured during the protest.

Aruna Jegadeesan, commission head of the investigation, was allotted to investigate the death toll, wounds caused by the police firing, and destruction of assets of the public during the protest.

On May 14th, she handed over the interim reports to the chief minister MK Stalin.

With the guidance of Aruna Jegadeesan’s reports, the chief minister has arrived at the conclusion with the following decisions

  • 235 cases that were filed against 400 people will be pulled back. The cases that are being examined by the central bureau of investigation(CBI) along with the ones who are held responsible for destroying the public assets will not be recalled.
  • The government has decided to settle accounts with 93 protestors who were pulled in by the police. The compensation of 1 lakh rupees each will be paid to these 93 protestors who underwent mental and physical torture.

  • Apart from these, an amount of 2 lakh rupees will be compensated for a 72-year-old dear who lost her descendent.
  • The cases that are pending in the supreme court will not be recalled.
